Wild Plants in the Social Cohesion
The Role of the Wild in the Social Cohesion in Nineveh Plains
Young women in traditional clothing representing the five ethnoreligious minorities (Christians, Yezidis, Shabaks, Turkmen, and Kaka’i) living in the Nineveh Plains of Iraq use the leaves of the edible wild plant Khobaz (Mallow in English) in preparing DOLMA, a traditional food eaten by all minorities of the Plain. Conserving wild plants not only improves the sustainability of biodiversity and food security in the Nineveh Plain of Northern Iraq, it also enhances social cohesion between diverse communities whose traditions and infrastructure have been upended by conflicts.
The Role of the Wild Plants in the Social Cohesion in Nineveh Plains
Young men in traditional clothing representing the five ethnoreligious minorities (Christians, Yezidis, Shabaks, Turkmen, and Kaka’i) living in the Nineveh Plains use the flowers of the edible wild plant Babonag (Chamomile in English) as a traditional herbal tea enjoyed by all minorities of the Nineveh, by sharing knowledge and resources related to them can create opportunities for social interaction and connection.

Seventeen Posters provide information about the culturally significant Wild plants of Nineveh Plains. This includes their commonly used names, ethnobotanical applications, and the threats they are currently encountering.

Eco-Printing of Wilde Plants
Four posters depict a training program held in Alqush on May 31, 2023, with the objective of instructing Art Teachers from diverse minority groups in the Nineveh Plains about eco-printing techniques utilizing local wild plants. Additionally, these posters address the primary challenges affecting the distribution and growth of culturally significant wild plants in the Nineveh Plains, highlighting the importance of their protection and outlining the necessary actions for preservation.
